Starting of the research (looking at different apps/games)

I wanted to start looking into already existing apps and games before I fully start learning about what is best for children in education. As I look at them i’ll hopefully see what makes them successful and how they target children. It will also show me if my app/game will be needed.

Different apps:

1. Forestry
An app that educates children about forest animals through pretty forest imagery and educating mini games.
It has high 4.5/5 star ratings on iTunes, and some online reviews: (top best apps for kids)

What makes Forestry good?
From playing the free version I already see that it’s very children friendly, interesting, with very attractive graphics and imagery. The characters are also very cute.

It has a range of different mini games that children can pick from to play and they can also unlock different outfits and characters which keeps the children engaged.

How can this help my idea?
From this app I gain a little bit more an idea on what an effective design is for children, what style the games in my app could be and how they can educate children in a playful way.

This app shows that there are things available that are good for improving children’s memory and help them learn what certain things are.

This app would be work well with mine as mine would be supporting it by teaching them subjects whilst these apps improve memory.

2. Artie’s Magic Pencil
An app that helps children learn how to draw.
Target audience for this is around 3 – 6 years olds.
What makes essays good?
This app is a really effective way of teaching young children how to draw and enjoy art/illustration. It’s recently popular, and has a very bold style with only flat colours which seem to suit the more younger children more than slightly older children.

How will this benefit my idea?
This proves that art goes down popular with young children and that it encourages them to enjoy their more creative side. It also gives me ideas on how the art part of my idea can be monitored/ taught and enjoyed by children.

There are of course many more art apps for kids that encourages them to be creative such as: ‘Lets Create! Pottery HD

Apps that encourage reading:
‘A Parcel of Courage’ – A nicely illustrated book that young kids to the age of 6 may enjoy as well as parents. Review of this picture book app is high.
Zoo Alphabet for kids‘ – Although this app is targeted at younger kids than I am it’s still an educational app that influences the teaching style of my game. Can be played here.

Helping the environment:
Animals for Kids Forest‘ – In this game you can clear up litter in forests and get rewarded by forest animals the more you help.

Other games for primary school children:
Dr Panda’s Hoopa City‘ with education values children can build their own roads and houses for their city.
